While many seniors all over the country choose to have their senior portraits taken over the summer, a great number prefer to wait for the beauty that tends to accompany the fall season, with its warm hues and golden foliage. At ABC School Photography, we love working with seniors who want fall photo sessions because it provides so many great artistic opportunities that aren’t available at any other time of year.
If you are considering getting your senior photos taken during the autumn season, consider the following tips:
#1 Take Advantage of Autumnal Landscapes
The most obvious benefit to taking photographs in the fall is the gorgeous landscapes that can serve as the backdrops to your pictures. As the trees start to change from green to fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, meadows and fields also transforming into warm, dry browns. Considering that most skin tones and hair colors coordinate well with these warmer hues, it’s a great idea to find locations that make the most of these changing colors. The fall is a beautiful time of year. Make the most of it!
#2 Choose Clothing in Fall Colors
It always is a good idea to keep the style of clothing simple for senior photo sessions, but this time of year it’s best to consider plain-colored shirts, pants, and dresses, particularly in browns, grays, and creams, with accents in reds, oranges, and perhaps deep blues and greens. With cooler weather, you also can wear long sleeves and pants and accessorize with a scarf. There are limitless possibilities with your wardrobe, but don’t get too busy with patterns and try to coordinate the colors to the season.
#3 Start Simple
Many high school seniors have big Pinterest dreams about all the creative fall shots they want from their session, but not every photo can be shot at unusual angles with props. Start with some of the tried-and-true poses using the fall landscapes as a backdrop before getting too creative with the more unique shots.
#4 Get Creative
Of course, that isn’t to say that unique, creative shots are bad. With all the changing colors, a good photographer will find all sorts of fun ways to bring out a high school senior’s personality with close-ups, creative angles, and props, all working with the lighting and the landscape to make a series of photographs really pop.
#5 Be Yourself
Most important, though, is that the teenager at the center of the photo session be given the opportunity to let their personality shine through the camera lens. The fall backdrops are lovely, but they aren’t the star of the show; you are. Have fun, look your best, and make great use of the autumn to make senior photos that you and your family will cherish forever.
